Joshua chs. 1-4 By: Edward Short© 1.Joshua ch. 1: God Commands Joshua to Conquer Canaan: Joshua 1:1-9: God greatly encouraged Joshua; what did he say? How was God with Joshua? “As I was with M_____, so I will be with y___.” What did God not want to “depart” from Joshua’s mouth? Joshua 1:10-18: Joshua instructed the community to prepare to cross the Jordan River. Who was to cross over and who was to remain on the east side? In what way did the community affirm Joshua as their leader? “…Just as we fully obeyed M_____, so we will obey y___.” (Note: the Hebrew word “Joshua” when translated into Greek is “Jesus.” There are some similarites between the Joshua of the Old Testament and Jesus Christ in the New Testament.) 2.Joshua ch. 2: Spies Enter Jericho: Why do you think the spies went to the house of a prostitute? What was the name of the prostitute? Explain why the spies were not found by the king’s messengers. What did Rahab tell the spies that she and everyone in Jericho had heard? Consequently, everyone in Jericho was a______. Vs. 8f: What did Rahab say that she knew? Considering that she came from the background of polytheism, Rahab made a very surprising statement regarding the LORD God; what did she say? “the LORD your God is God in h______ a_____ and on the e______ b______.” Describe the “agreement” and the plan that Rahab and the spies made. What kind of report did the spies give when they returned to Joshua? Mathew chapter one, verse five, mentions a Rahab, who almost certainly is this same person. If so, then Rahab was whose ancestor? 3.Joshua ch. 3: The Israelites Cross the Jordan: Although the Jordan River is famous, it is not a wide river, except when at flood stage. When the Israelites prepared to cross, it was at flood stage. In the least, how many people were to cross the river (Num. 26:51, 62)? Vs. 5: “C__________ yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do a________ t______ among you.” Describe what the people saw the next day. The community should not get close to the ark of the covenant; how far were they to stay from it? “…the p_______ who carry the ark of the LORD--the Lord of all the earth--set f_____ i__ the J_______, its w_______” will (do what)? Look at a map and show where the waters piled up. In this way, God enabled the Israelites to walk to the opposite shore on d___ g______. In this way, the Israelites peacefully entered Canaan, just as God had promised long before. To whom had God made such a promise? 1) Gen. 15:12-19; 2) Ex. 3:7-8. 4.Numbers ch. 4: A Monument is Built: After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, what kind of stone monument did God tell Joshua to build in memory of this event? Vs. 6, 22: For whom especially was this monument built? Vs. 22-24: “…He did this so that a___ the p_______ of the e_____ might know that the hand of the LORD is p________ and so that you might always f_____ the LORD your God.” That day, “the LORD e_______ Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they revered him all the days of his life, just as they had revered M______.”
