Joshua chs. 9 - 12 By: Edward Short© 1.Joshua ch. 9: Gibeonites Deceive Joshua: Josh. 9:1-27: Describe how the Gibeonites deceived Joshua. Did what the Gibeonites say constitute a lie? (Note: Gibeon was about 16 km. from Jericho.) Vs. 24: What motivated the Gibeonites? They were afraid that Joshua would w____ them out; they feared for their l_____. Vs. 14: When Joshua and the Israelites decided to make a treaty with the Gibeonites, whose will did they not seek? After he realized that they had been deceived, why did Joshua not rescind the treaty? What lesson do we learn from this? Finally, what did Joshua decide to do about the situation? Memorize v. 14: “The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not i_______ of the LORD.” Today therefore, whenever we need make a decision, what is the first thing we should do? 2.Joshua ch. 10: The Day the Sun Stood Still: Josh. 10:1-8: What event caused the Gibeonites to call Joshua to the rescue? Jehovah God encouraged Joshua with these words: “’ Do not be a______ of them; I have given them into your h____. Not one of them will be able to w_________ you.’” Josh. 10:9-15: God gave the Israelites victory in at least three ways: 1) v. 10: The LORD threw them into c__________ before Israel. [The Easy-to-Read Chinese (Putonghua) Version is also given.] 2) v. 11: “the LORD hurled large h__________ down on them from the sky” with the result that m____ people died from the h___________ than were killed by the Israelite troops. 3) vs. 12-15: At the LORD God’s bidding, the “sun s_____ s_____, and the m____ s_______, till the nation a________ itself on its enemies.” Perhaps the reader would like to ask this writer, “What happened so that the sun stood still?” The answer is easy; only four words are required: I do not know. We do know one thing however: This was a miracle performed by the one and only God of heaven. If you believe verse eleven, why doubt verses twelve through fourteen? (Note: The “Book of Jashar” was a composition of that day that is not extant today. Although it was not considered Scripture, yet some of the contents were well-written and were accurate and thus were incorporated by Bible writers. See also 2 Samuel 1:18 and Numbers 21:14.) 3.Joshua 10:16-43: Defeating Cities in Middle and Southern Canaan: Josh. 10:16-28: Describe how Joshua dealt with the five kings. Josh. 10:29-43: List the kings, peoples and territories that Joshua conquered. He (they) “left no survivors. He totally d________ all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had c_________.” Note that once again we emphasize that the Israelites entered Canaan not only to subdue and take the land that God promised long before to Abraham and his descendents, they also exercised judgment on behalf of God. The idolatry of the Canaanites at that time not only included adultery, but also the murder of children who were offered as sacrifice to the idols. No wonder that “…Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.” (v. 40). Vs. 42: How were Joshua and the Israelite army able to win so many battles and conquer the land of Canaan? It was because “the LORD, the G___ of Israel, f______ for Israel.” What enlightenment did Joshua ch. ten give you? 4.Joshua 11-12: Josh. 11:1-23: Northern Kings Defeated: List the kings that Joshua defeated. Vs. 13: Note the three Chinese translations that are given [Union Version, New Version, Putonghua Version; each translation is different]. [The word under discussion is “mounds” in the NIV, RSV, NASB, etc and “strength” in the KJV.] The original Hebrew is “tel” and tel means [Chinese word is “qiu” and it means “mound”], so the "New Version” is the accurate translation here. Modern archaeologists have discovered that inside a “tel” are several cities and cultures build on top of one another. The capitol of modern Israel is Tel Aviv and includes this word in the name. Vs. 23: Conclusion: “So Joshua t____ the entire land, just as the LORD had d________ Moses, and he gave it as an i__________ to Israel according to their tribal divisions. Then the land had r____ from w___.” Locate on a Bible map all the cities and territories that Joshua subdued as recorded in Joshua chs. nine through twelve. (Note: Some ancient locations have not yet been positively identified by archaeologists.)
