Joshua chs. 13 - 22 By: Edward Short© 1.Joshua 13: Land Still to be Occupied and Land to be Divided: Vs. 1: How do we know that it has taken many years for the Israelites to occupy Canaan and that it will still take a long time before the job will be completed? “When Joshua was o____ and well advanced in years, the LORD said to him, ‘You are very o____, and there are s____ very large areas of land to be taken over.’” 2.Joshua 14: Caleb Receives Hebron as Inheritance: Vs. 6-15: Of what did Caleb remind Joshua? Vs. 10: How many years have passed since the events recorded in Numbers 13 and 14? How did Caleb describe his own strength? What city did Caleb conquer? 3.Joshua 15-21: Division of the Land: Locate on a Bible map all the cities mentioned in Joshua chs. 15 through 21. Locate on a Bible map all the land given to the [Israelite] tribes as inheritance. Joshua 15:63: To what ethnic group did Jerusalem belong originally? (See Judges 1:8, 21 and 2 Samuel 5:6-7.) Joshua 20: Locate the “cities of refuge” on a Bible map. What is a “city of refuge”? Joshua 20:1-9: What were the regulations for cities of refuge? Joshua 21: Vs. 41: How many cities were the Levites given? List some of the cities given to the Levites. Vs. 43-45: These verses constitute one of the important conclusions in the book of Joshua: Although some areas of land have not yet been taken completely, nonetheless, the promise God gave Abraham many years ago has been fulfilled; all promises have been fulfilled. The original inhabitants of Canaan have not the power to force the Israelites to leave! God’s chosen people have received their “homeland.” Please memorize Joshua 21:43-45: “43 So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their f___________, and they took p___________ of it and settled t______. 44 The LORD gave them r_____ on every side, just as he had s______ to their forefathers. Not one of their _______ w__________ them; the LORD handed all their e_________ over to them. 45 Not o____ of all the LORD'S good promises to the house of Israel f_______; every one was f________.” Where in all the rest of the Bible can one find examples of God failing to fulfill his promises? Of the promises that God gives Christians today, [as taught] in the New Testament, which ones will fail? How does Joshua 21:43-45 inspire you? [I.e., what do you learn from it?] 4.Joshua 22: A Mistaken Presumption: Vs. 1-9: What tribes did Joshua commend and tell to return to the eastern side of the Jordan River? Why did they want to return? (See Numbers ch. 32.) Vs. 10: What did they build upon returning? Vs. 11-20: How the Israelites on the west side of the Jordan react when they heard what those on the east side had done? Before they even gave their brother Israelites on the east side of the Jordan a chance to explain and defend their actions, what did those on the west side prepare to do? When those on the Jordan’s west lectured those on the east, what examples from history did they cite to explain their concern and to strengthen the logic of their case? Vs. 21-29: There was only one problem with what those east of the Jordan said; what was it? Their conclusion was (wrong) ! How did the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh defend themselves? Vs. 30-34: Did Phinehas the priest, leaders of the community and the other Israelites believe and accept the explanation given by their brothers? What name did the Reubenites and Gadites give the altar? This name meant [this altar is] “A Witness B________ Us that the LORD is God.” Have you and I ever jumped to conclusions about a person or event, only to find out later that our viewpoint or our conclusion was wrong? How can we avoid making such mistakes?
