   "The Cross Demands a Reaction"

“Who is Jesus?”  What a question!  For Christians, this is easily answered, but for non-Christians, the question, “Who is Jesus?” is very difficult.  It’s difficult because in answering the question of who Jesus is, one makes a judgment regarding Jesus.  Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, and this leads C. S. Lewis, the well-known English novelist and theologian, to assert that there are only three possibilities (or three choices) regarding the personage of Jesus: Either  he’s a fraud, a lunatic or else he is the Son of God.  Let’s talk about it.

First, perhaps Jesus was a fraud, a cheat; all the miracles recorded in the New Testament are fakes.  For example, before Jesus “raised” Lazarus from the dead, the two of them colluded so Lazarus pretended to be dead.  He waited in the tomb (which was a cave) until Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” and out he came!  All those standing around thought and believed that Jesus had resurrected Lazarus from death.  Or, whenever Jesus gave sight to the blind, enabled the lame to walk, cleansed lepers—just as with Lazarus—Jesus collaborated with the person beforehand and deceived the witnesses.

The second possibility is that Jesus himself was deceived by other people.  This theory assumes that Jesus was demented if not crazy.  For example, two or three people got together and determined to delude Jesus regarding himself.  One man pretended to be blind and a second person goaded Jesus with statements like, “I bet you can heal that blind man.”  Finally, Jesus accepted the challenge and tried to heal him, and suddenly he who was “blind” could now see!  The result was that others standing by, and Jesus himself, were all convinced that he had divine powers and could perform miracles.  Easy!

Can we believe either of these theories?  Was Jesus a fraud?  He who taught others to live morally and ethically, he who reminded others to obey all of God’s commands, he who castigated hypocrites—could this person himself live a totally fraudulent life and pretend to be a miracle worker without someone seeing through it all?  He deceived that many people?  No one found him out?  Regarding the second theory, that Jesus was duped by others, can you really believe that Jesus was that simple-minded?  He whose wisdom closed the mouths of those who criticized him then (the scribes and lawyers), and makes scholars today stand in awe—do you think this Jesus could be cajoled or flattered into thinking that he could perform miracles and that he was the Son of God?  Is it possible?!

The third choice is that Jesus was exactly who he claimed to be, the Son of God.  Jesus was the eternal God in the human form of flesh and blood.  In order to display God’s care, Jesus lived among men and performed miracles.  In order to state “I am the way and the truth and the life,” Jesus enacted God’s truth in his life.  In order to prove God’s love, Jesus sacrificed himself and was nailed to a cross.  In order to demonstrate God’s power, Jesus was resurrected from the grave through which believers receive forgiveness of sin.

Who is Jesus?  There are only three options.  Was he the most successful fraud the world has ever seen?  Or was he a lunatic, the pawn of those who deceived him?  Or was he the Son of God?  As a Christian, I have no trouble shouting from the housetop that Jesus was exactly who he claimed to be—the Son of God and the Savior of the world.
